Figuring out your family travel insurance is one of the major items that you need to figure out before your next family vacation. It is critical that you have travel insurance for kids and for your entire family before you leave on your next trip.
For us, while we were planning our 1 year trip around the world, figuring out family holiday insurance was a big to-do and a non-negotiable! It can be sometimes overwhelming and unsettling because it is something that could impact your family and really important to get right.
So, we’ve decided to put together this World Nomads travel insurance review to help all of you while you are trying to make this critical decision. This is what we did and why we chose World Nomads from all of the other travel insurance companies.
COVID UPDATE: World Nomads have added details and information for COVID-19 travel. Please review their website for the policies in place for the latest COVID-19 travel insurance. The good news is that they have outlined all the details you need to know about coronavirus and travelling internationally. These are updated regularly so check their website for the latest information.

Why do you need international family travel insurance?
First off – Why do you need insurance? Plain and simple there is always something that could go wrong and it is better to have the insurance than to not have it.
For us, the cost was all part of the planning of the trip for our 1 year of full-time travel. Family holiday insurance is one thing that you have to purchase. In my opinion, if you can’t afford travel insurance for your travels then you shouldn’t be going on the trip.
Although we originally looked into World Nomads for long term travel insurance while we travelled for a year with family, we have now used it for subsequent short-term international holidays.
6 Things We Love About World Nomads Insurance
1. Online Travel Quote
The best thing is it’s so easy to get a FREE travel insurance online quote. It is extremely simple, you just add in the countries, country residence, start date, end date and ages of travellers. That’s it!!
Then you get a quote for both the Standard Plan and the Explorer Plan right away. If you want you can have the quotes sent to your email address and decide later while you review it. The quote will have all the details to review the World Nomads travel insurance before you purchase it. The quote and purchasing process can’t be any easier than that!
We found it to be the cheapest coverage that we could get when compared to other insurance plans for the same coverage, especially with the activities and type of backpacking travelling we were going to be doing.
2. Family Travel Quote
We got an all-encompassing view and price for our entire family with World Nomads insurance. Since you put in all the ages of the family, including kids in the quote and the policy comes back as one policy.
All the details are put under one policy which makes it extremely easy to manage. It’s a simple thing but makes it way less complex than managing four different policies for our entire family.
3. Easy to Make Changes to Travel Insurance
The problem with planning an entire year of travel is that sometimes you don’t know exactly where you are going. We had some ideas of where we were going to travel, but those changed along the way.
We ended up going to 23 countries in 1 year and all were covered with World Nomads insurance!
You can buy more coverage or claim online while you are still away. You can even buy a World Nomads policy if you’re already travelling!
It is very easy to go online and add countries to your policy or talk to a representative on the phone to update this. Some may have additional costs for coverage, whereas some others may not. It all depends on the circumstances, but for our situation, we needed to add in a few countries and it did not change our pricing.
4. Plain Language
The policies are written in plain language and easy to understand without questioning the details or technical jargon. I actually felt smart reading the insurance policy and quote, which made me feel more comfortable really knowing what was covered.
5. Able to Print Off Travel Insurance Documents
Some countries require you to show proof of travel insurance before entering into a county. We simply printed off a copy of our policy and put it in with our passports in case we needed it. It was simply a couple of pages and straightforward.
Tip: I also kept an electronic copy on dropbox and emailed it to our extended family members so they had access to it if for any reason both of us (mom and dad) were unable to communicate/injured/etc it for the kid’s safety.
6. Activities & Adventure
With World Nomads insurance coverage, we loved that we weren’t limited to the activities that we wanted to do! Here are just some of the activities and adventures that we went on and was covered!
- Scuba Diving
- Snorkelling
- Hiking
- Campervanning / RVing
- Riding Camels
- Kayaking
- Boat Cruises
Making a Claim
We, fortunately, did not need to make a single claim to World Nomads, so I can’t comment on the claim process but after researching into the process of how to submit a claim it seems straight forward and can be done from the road.
It’s not to say that we didn’t have any close calls. We were in Italy when an earthquake struck a neighbouring province and we were in Bali at the time when a volcano was erupting and flight in and out of Bali were cancelled and travel disruption. You can find out more about Natural disaster coverage here.
We also needed some dental work done for our son, but the cost in Bali was less than $25 so we chose not to submit a claim just out of pure laziness on our part.
You can find out about some real insurance claim stories here, which we reviewed before purchasing the World Nomad family travel insurance.
World Nomads Customer Service
I had to make one phone call into World Nomads since I needed to add the United States to our coverage at the tail end of our trip. I phoned in from New Zealand because I wanted to be certain that it was added and determine what the extra cost was before we booked our flight to the USA.
My experience with the service representative was awesome, it was quick, efficient and they very knowledgeable on the details and services needed.
